Eight medical interns have been remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, where they were charged with public nuisance in connection with a protest over delayed allowances.
The interns were arrested on August 12 after allegedly picking up placards and marching along Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala. The prosecution alleges that their actions disrupted traffic and inconvenienced other road users and activities in the area.
The eight appeared before Grade One Magistrate Rophine Achayo on Friday, August 14, where the charges were read to them. They jointly denied the allegations.
State prosecutor Ms. Hope Masawi told court that investigations into the matter had been completed and asked the court to set a date for the hearing of the case.
However, the defence team, led by lawyer Yasin Ssentumbwe Managomba, applied for bail for the accused.
“We pray, if it pleases court, that the accused be released on bail,” Ssentumbwe submitted.
The prosecution objected to the bail application, arguing that it had not been given sufficient time to prepare its response.
Ms. Masawi maintained that the prosecution has a right to respond to every bail application before court.
Magistrate Achayo agreed with the prosecution, ruling that the State was entitled to sufficient time to respond to the application.
The magistrate subsequently adjourned the matter to August 17, 2026, when the court is expected to hear the prosecution’s response to the bail application.
The eight medical interns will remain on remand at Luzira Prison until the matter comes back before court.
